Jack Sonenberg, a New York artist, is perhaps best recognized for his woodcuts, but his graphic works have always complemented his painting endeavors. Both his drawings and paintings showcased at the Feingarten Galleries exhibit a remarkable sensitivity to surface textures. In his oil paintings, the colors are subtly muted, creating a nearly dull metallic quality, where touches of red, blue, yellow, or green stand out all the more due to their understated application. In “Sounding I,” delicate variations in the ground are interrupted only by the suggestion of a calligraphic form that rises slightly from the surface. Meanwhile, works like “Oasis I,” “Oasis II,” and “White Matrix” feature a strong, rectangular central form that commands attention within the space.
